Hi, my name is Alyssa, and I am the owner of Altered State. I am a professional seamstress who specializes in formal and wedding gown alterations, but as my business is deemed non essential I have been shuttered until further notice. With lots of free time now on my hands, I am focusing on volunteering my time to make reusable cloth masks to address the shortage in protective gear for healthcare workers during this crisis.
What is the goal?
As you all know, there is an alarming shortage of protective gear for those on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19. While reusable masks are not nearly as effective as the N95 masks at protecting against pathogens, the CDC has deemed them appropriate in a time of crisis such as this. My goal is to make as many reusable cotton masks as possible for donation to local healthcare workers: I have already made 85 masks with supplies I had on hand and am raising funds to order supplies to make at least another 250 more. I will also be making surgical caps and isolation gowns.
Where are PPE being donated?
All reusable masks are currently being donated to Saratoga Hospital, where they can be used in a variety of ways to reduce the demand on the PPE supplies that are needed for direct patient care. I am now making surgical caps for donation to the hospital as well. While the hospital does not accept homemade gowns at this time, I will be making a limited number of isolation gowns for individuals in the healthcare field for their personal use under hospital-issued protective gear (by request and as funds allow).
What do donations cover?
I will be volunteering my time, so all monetary donations will be used to cover the cost of materials/overhead, the bulk of which is fabric and elastic yardage: the cost of materials for each mask is about $1.50. Any excess funds not spent will be donated to the American Red Cross.
