According to research, Black teachers have the highest turnover/quit rates of all teachers demographics (Carver-Thomas, 2018). This finding is even more pronounced due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Camp et al., 2022). Research indicates one of the biggest hurdles facing current and future Black teachers is licensure exams which can be very costly, especially for students coming from low-income homes (Fletcher, 2022). In fact, Black teachers are the least likely of all demographics to pass licensure exams such as the Praxis (NCTQ, 2019) and the least likely to enter and remain in the classroom.

***Between 2000 and 2018, the number of Black teachers increased by just 11,000, less than 1,000 per year. White teachers increased by 279,000, Hispanic teachers grew by 162,000, and Asian teachers increased by 27,000 (NCES, 2018).

For the past two years, the Test Prep Institute, an initiative of the Fletcher Education Solutions consulting team, has researched this particular challenge and has worked closely with teachers one-on-one to provide resources and a tutor for various licensure exams.

Given the inevitable impact COVID-19 will have on Black teachers, we are raising funds to double down on our efforts to help as many teachers as possible pass their licensure exam in 2023. 100% of the funds received will be used to purchase books, flashcards, and tutors (certified, experienced teachers) for each participant.
