My name is Dejinay Reed and I am the 7th grade ELA teacher at FLI. I am excited to introduce an innovative learning experience that will be shared with the world. In efforts to complete our student- lead documentary, #More Than Academics, we are in need of funds to pay our professional filmmaker, producer, and event space for the premiere. Every donation will get us closer to our goal of completing this transformative project. The documentary is scheduled to premiere late September 2020!
Synopsis: The documentary More Than Academics follows middle school students from New York City on their journey to disrupting the traditional classroom experience, where students’ voices are suppressed and test-scores take precedence. More Than Academics tells stories of students restoring relationships and igniting their creativity. The documentary boldly encapsulates students' vulnerability in sharing their identities, stressors, dreams, and their perspectives on the education system. From student testimonies to round-table interviews, #MoreThanAcademics communicates a clear message: students are butterflies trapped in an academic cocoon.
