Donation protected
This year we raise money at Barry's Cares Treads for Change to support the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge; led by Jennifer Cavanaugh; breast cancer survivor & now, marathon runner. Collectively, we will keep our tread mill running for FIVE STRAIGHT HOURS! Please consider making a donation towards our personal fundraising page and help us PAY IT FORWARD! Your support means the world to us!
A few words from Jen and why her #JCAVSTRONG army will tread & pay it forward come March 14th!
'In June of 2018 I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer; it was a fairly aggressive subtype called HER2+ and ER/PR-. I found the lump myself, shortly after my third child was born and the probability that my lump was in fact malignant was less than 2%. I have no family history of breast cancer. Yet, here I am, a 37 year old woman, wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and now a survivor of cancer. My journey through this awful disease has been hard, impossible at times, but with one foot in front of the other I've gotten to where I'm standing now. In 14 short months my body was put to the test with chemo, surgery, radiation and so much more. I can't say I've done it all gracefully or without tears. I can't say that it hasn't tested me or that I've tackled it without wanting to give up sometimes. It's without a doubt been the hardest year of my life. However the blessing at the end of my cancer road is that this hardship of a year is allowing me a second chance to live my life and I plan and hope to do just that.
I've learned a lot in a few short months and one thing that has really resonated with me is that cancer is one word but it describes many different diseases and there isn't one method that fixes all cancers and so the research is essential and while they've come so far, there is still so much to learn and do. My cancer 10 years ago would not have been curable, so I owe so much of this next chapter of my life to the cutting -edge research done before me. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Dana Farber. My team of doctors and nurses were nothing short of incredible. The care and compassion I received from everyone at this institution, during the darkest days of my life, is something I will never forget.
On April 20, I will run in honor and in memory of those who we have loved and lost, those who have bravely battled the disease, and those who continue to fight daily. One hundred percent of every dollar raised supports the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These funds are fueling some of today's most promising basic cancer research. And, as I know all too well, it is successful cancer research that is allowing me to continue to do what I want most in this life and that is to be a dedicated, loving and engaging wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. 10 years ago, my cancer was not curable, and now, here I am today, living proof that this research matters! It makes an impact and it’s essential to making cancer a thing of the past!'
