Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Last week, Mom came down to Arizona to visit a friend. While hiking she tripped on a rock and fell. After that her back began to hurt, which quickly turned into her knee starting to hurt again (she had a replacement done on the right knee in September).

Very shortly after she began to have a low appetite, fever, and immobility to the point of needing crutches. But if you know Mom, then you know she won’t let injury get in the way. After taking a shower Friday morning (I think) she fell and couldn’t get back up. The paramedics were called and as Mom put it, “some hunky firefighters showed up.” She’s also on some pain meds.

She was transported to a facility in Phoenix and is receiving care from a great team! It seems to the Doctors here that the knee had been infected upon replacement and was activated during the hiking fall. She was septic for a short time when the infection reached her blood stream. But antibiotics have fought it off for now.

The next step is a biopsy of the knee to determine if that’s the culprit of the infection. If so, there will be a surgery to either wash or replace the knee with a short term “spacer” of antibiotic cement that she could walk on.

Right now we are looking at a hospital stay here in Phoenix until Sunday or possibly next Thursday. If she is mobile enough, we will head back to Minneapolis for further treatment. Which could mean up to 6 weeks in hospital to receive IV antibiotics, plus a surgery to replace the temporary knee with a permanent one that’s not infected this time!

Right now she is barely mobile as the infection really took it out of her. But she is able to move to a chair for a brief time with assistance. Hearing from friends may help more than you know.

Having said all that, Mom is currently in between jobs as she was leaving one position, for a change to a new position that was supposed to start this past Wednesday, but due to this stay, she can’t start. No job, no insurance.

So at the moment, all of this is going to be out of pocket. This is by no means anyone else’s responsibility. But if you have been helped by my Mom in the past, if she has babysat for you, cleaned your house, talked to your parents for you, given you advice, fought for you in a time of need - please understand this is her time of need.

Also, money is not necessary, if you can help out at her house when we get back, make a call to improve her spirits, or post something funny on her Facebook that would be amazing! Thank you all in advance! The Okey bunch appreciates you!!!
