A Biski For G

Griffin has Duchenne Muscular dystrophy, a progressive, life-limiting muscle wasting disease. He also has a need for speed and a passion for outdoor adventures. He looks forward to the snowy months eagerly, even though it gets harder for him to walk outdoors, because it means he can ski! Griffin can’t stand on skis, so he uses an adaptive sit ski, or a bi ski. A couple of times a year, we take Griffin skiing through adaptive ski programs in our area. Brian (his dad) is currently training to become an adaptive ski instructor. Once he is certified, he’ll be able to “pilot” sit skis for people with disabilities, helping to control speed and assisting with guiding the sit ski when needed. If Griffin had his own sit ski, he’d also be able to take him out skiing anytime and anywhere he wants, which means Griffin would be able to go on family ski trips with his dad and brother (mom still hangs out on the bunny slopes...). Griffin would love to be able to participate in his school’s winter ski program at a local mountain, and we’d love to give him as many skiing opportunities as we can while he is still healthy and strong enough. In order to make this happen, he needs his own sit ski. With a price tag of about $6,500, this is out of range for us. We try not to ask for funds to directly support our own family very often, preferring to direct potential donors to organizations that will help all those with his condition. But we really want to be able to make this dream a reality for this pretty darn amazing boy (yes, we are biased). AND, anything we raise beyond the cost of the ski will be donated to JB’s Keys to DMD, an incredible organization that provides no-cost adaptive ski weekends through New England Disabled Sports for children with Duchenne. Our hope is that we can both make Griffin’s ski dreams come true, and help other kids with Duchenne get to experience the joy of the slopes that our boy can’t get enough of. Thank you!
