Dad’s Bypass surgery:
Many, many, amazing people have reached out to our family to ask what they can do for our Dad, Mom, and family during this time… Here is a very real and tangible way!
The Backstory:
Dad, (AKA Darryl/Sigmon/Sarge/Big D, and many other names he has answered to over the years..) was going to have a neck surgery back at the end of October. A Stress Test was ordered prior to surgery for a few irrelevant reasons that came back with "Classically Abnormal" (the Dr’s words) results… Neck surgery was canceled and was scheduled for a Diagnostic Cardiac Cath. The plan was to stent any arteries that needed it, unless they were too bad. Unfortunately, that was in fact the case. The result, and next step he had to take was to schedule surgery.
On November 29th he will have Quintuple (that's 5!) Bypass surgery
Bypass surgery is a major and intense surgery. He’s having it done on 3 major arteries and 2 or more arteries that are branched off.
After surgery, he will remain in the hospital for a minimum of 1 week and will then have a minimum of 4-8 weeks at home recovering. Gloria, his wife, our mom, will require 2-4 weeks away from work to be there for him. Although Dad has some paid time off, this still results in a quite a bit of unpaid time away from work for both of them.
Many of you know, as quick as Mom and Dad are to offer help to others- they are not the type of people to ask or even accept it for themselves. If you are still reading this, there’s a good chance you are someone that has been on the receiving end of their generosity (or at least witnessed it a time or two). "We can't help" has never really been in their vocabulary. If there’s one thing I think anyone that knows our dad can agree on, it's this: He truly and wholeheartedly lives out his life motto of “LGLP” (Love God, Love People)!
Here's how you can help them:
First and foremost, Prayer. We all, including him, have faith that God is going to protect him through all of this. Please pray and speak that into life alongside us. Pray for protection over our dad. Pray for the surgeon & surgical team who will be operating on his heart. Pray for Mom’s heart as she waits in the waiting room, as well as their 9 children (us) and 6 granddaughters. [Mike, Lauren, Kinslee, Braelyn, Felicity, and Claire; Chris, Rachel, and Eloise; David, Tiffany, and Charlee; Stephen; Austin; Samantha].
Financially:
This will put financial strain on their lives that they were not prepared for. They’re not going to ask for it, so we’ve decided its our job as their children to ask for them and accept the help that's out there. It took quite a bit of convincing for them to even give us their blessing to do this, but we would've likely done it anyway.
Other Tangible Ways:
If you are unable to financially give, there are still other ways you can love on them! Whether through the meal train, prayers, a random favor, etc. Stay tuned for all these things! We'll ask. AND, share this link to help us spread the word!
Here is where you can follow along with further updates about Darryl's recovery as well
as further needs as they arise: The blog for "Darryl's Heart"
Thank you and we (their children) love you!!
[The financial gifts given in this GoFundMe will go directly toward offsetting their loss of
income during this time, as well as travel expenses (the hospital is about an hour away
from where they live).]
