Joe's Blue Crew
Donation protected
Bill Higgins and his wife, Ann, currently reside in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago with their two children Joe (16) and Maeve (12). For the past nine years, Bill has proudly served as a police officer for the Village of Evergreen Park. Ann devotes her time and hard work as a nurse at Little Company of Mary Hospital.
In 2003, Joe was born with cerebral palsy and mental retardation. As a young child, Joe had to undergo multiple surgeries leaving Bill and Ann with overwhelming medical bills. In 2007, Bill and Ann's daughter, Maeve, was also born with cerebral palsy. Joe, unable to walk, requires a wheelchair while Maeve uses leg braces and walking crutches for everyday activities. To this day, Bill and Ann make countless visits to various doctor appointments having to endure the costly expenses which come along with Joe and Maeve's medical equipment.
Recently, Joe visited the hospital and was diagnosed with cholesteatoma. Cholesteatoma is an abnormal, noncancerous skin growth that can develop over time. Joe underwent a five hour surgery, which ultimately, removed a vast majority of the cholesteatoma. Unfortunately, the skin growth infected Joe’s tissue and a large area of the bone on the left side of his head which will require two follow up surgeries in the future. As a result of the initial surgery, Joe was in the hospital for nine days requiring constant care and monitoring by Bill and Ann while also taking care of Maeve's everyday needs.
The Higgin’s family is going through a difficult time and any support we can offer will make a difference. The financial responsibility that coincides with any health defect is burdensome. Let’s serve and protect our family in the smallest way possible.
As a department, we have organized and set up the following fundraiser page where all donations will go directly to Bill Higgins and his family. Please feel free to share any of this information with your family and friends.
