The 1st Nebraska Volunteers Brass Band
The 1st Nebraska Volunteers Brass Band is a “Living History” unit preserving the look and sound of Nebraska’s original Civil War band.
We wear Union army Civil War uniforms, and play authentic brass band music taken from original Civil War band books.
1st Nebraska performs for Civil War related events, Civic and Patriotic Events, and Community Festivals
We are looking for donations to complete our authentic look and sound with orginal Civil War brass instruments. Fortunately, many have been preserved in collections and/or currently in use by other reenactment bands.
This makes acquiring these instruments time consuming and expensive. That is why we are seeking the help of the community, through this gofundme page, to raise the $60,000 we need to outfit our entire band with instruments.
Now we don't only play music we also provide a "Living History" lesson. Each of our performances include a narration that describes the music the audience is hearing and relates details of soldiering during the Civil War. This provides historical context for our music, and through education increases the audience’s appreciation for pioneer days in Nebraska.
Now, you might be asking yourself "why don't we just use modern instruments? Well, the instruments used during the Civil War were unique and as such had a unique sound that modern instruments can't replicate.
These instruments include Over-the-Shoulder (OTS) Saxhorns, the most common style of Civil War brass instruments. Since bands marched in front of the troops, having backward pointing bells made it easier for the soldiers to hear what music was being played.
The 1st Nebraska needs a variety of these OTS instruments: 2 E-flat Cornets, 2 B-flat Cornets, 3 E-flat Alto Horns, 2 B-flat Tenor Horns, 2 Baritones, and 2 E-flat Bass Saxhorns. We also need 2 snare drums and 1 bass drum. That’s 16 instruments in all.
Your donation is completely tax-deductable as we are a 501c3 public charity.
