Will Donnelly was a husband, brother, son, Kings Pointer, and Marine. He gave the last full measure of devotion to his country and Corps on November 25, 2010 in Sangin, Afghanistan as a Platoon Commander in Third Battalion, Fifth Marines (Darkhorse).
Will's sacrifice impacted hundreds, and was especially felt amongst his classmates from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Kings Point is the smallest service academy, making Will’s sacrifice deeply felt amongst both his class and the wider Kings Point community. Will's tremendous life, one of valor, duty, and honor, was an example to his classmates. To fully recognize Will’s ultimate sacrifice, his classmates want to ensure his memory is properly honored. Kings Point has a long tradition of honor and service, and future midshipmen should be able to see a tangible reminder that Will is one of the heroes who carried such tradition through example.
Will’s classmates had already put away money to present the Academy with a class gift, a compass rose on the grinder where all Midshipmen meet for daily formation and meals. Due to the vagaries of federal contracting, the gift has not been completed but this delay has allowed his classmates to re-design the compass rose and dedicate it as a memorial to Will. This re-design increased the budget for the compass rose, and we are undertaking this campaign to raise the money necessary to finish the memorial and properly honor Will.
Anything you can give is appreciated. We hope to have all funds raised by the end of Summer 2017 so by September 2018 we can complete the memorial in time for Will’s 10 year class reunion.
