First Cousins Film
Bonjour! We are the "Istre sisters" from Lafayette, Louisiana, and we directed a documentary film very near and dear to our hearts called First Cousins: Cajun and Creole Music in South Louisiana. This film, recently airing on LPB/PBS, explores the music, language, and culture of South Louisiana's Cajun and Creole people who share a strong French heritage. Whether our ancestors arrived as exiled Acadians, enslaved Africans, or some other way, they overcame remarkable hardships and passed on a legacy of cultural pride. As Cajuns and Creoles in today's chaotic world, we stand united firmly as family in celebration of the rich cultural heritage we share.
All contributing musicians, artists, audio engineers, videographers, actors, photographers, editors, and scholars donated their time & talents as a LABOR OF LOVE! Not a single person requested a single dime for all their efforts!
Our "cousins" at historic sites as far away as Nova Scotia, the Caribbean Isles, France, and West Africa have specifically requested to screen our film at these respective locations. Taking the film on a world tour will require more funds for traveling expenses that we currently do not have. This opportunity also necessitates that we translate the entire film into French and re-order another shipment of DVDs including the French subtitles to reach a wider audience.
We appreciate each one of you for reading about our work and supporting our efforts to preserve and present our special film to the world!
