Dear friends and family,
A little over 5 years ago, my dad was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a debilitating lung condition. For the last 2 years, he has required constant oxygen. Upon learning he may qualify for a lung transplant, he worked very hard to lose weight and meet the milestones required. On September 17, 2019, he was told that his hard work paid off and he qualified for the transplant.
He was told that he would need to be patient as things could take time. Although waiting can be difficult, it would also allow my parents time to make the necessary arrangements for the surgery. The surgery was set to take place in Toronto and they were told that they would be required to stay in Toronto for at least 3 months, which meant they would need to find accommodations.
After being on the lung transplant list for just 10 days, on Friday September 27, 2019, my dad received the call to let him know a lung was available. It was exciting and scary at the same time. However, it also meant that there was no longer time to make arrangements.
The transplant surgery was successful, but my dad suffered from delirium for several days following the surgery. He is still in the ICU as he requires blood and plasma transfusions as tests show that his body is attempting to reject the new lung.
Due to how quickly everything has transpired, there was not a lot of time to prepare mentally, physically, and financially. My mom has been staying in a hotel since Friday when the surgery took place, but as of today has moved into a one bedroom condo.
I have started this page in hopes of helping to provide my mom with some financial support for accommodations, necessities, and travel back and forth, while she continues to support my dad in his recovery.
