Twelve years ago, two families, the Landrys and the Schrameyers, sat down at the same table after mass in Dwyer Hall to share a few donuts. We had no idea how all of our relationships would grow. The "big girls" were only five and between the two families, there were only three children. Now, 12 years later, the "Landmeyer" family has grown into an even stronger unit of 10.
We are truly one family. We celebrate holidays together, travel together and laugh and cry together. That’s why writing this is so difficult. Last week we were all shocked by the news that Hayley has Multiple Sclerosis. I am sure I was not the only one that thought…Nah…there must be a mistake, not Hayley. She is only 17. How can this be? But, after the initial shock, I sat up and said...now what? And I knew the answer...whatever comes, we will fight as ONE!
In the past 13 days, Hayley has had three MRIs, been hospitalized for five nights/six days, received five rounds of steroid treatment and started a new medication, and has been poked and prodded more than she'd like. Hayley has seen just about every neurologist and neuro student at Children’s Hospital. One of the students even asked if he could take a video of her eyes so he could show his fellow classmates. See Hayley’s triggering symptom was blurred and double vision. Neuro students read about this in medical books and journals, but rarely, if ever, see it in patients as it is such an uncommon symptom. If you need help on an eye exam, ask her to show you, she’s completed at least 100 of them in the past two weeks.
The result of three MRIs was crushing, they showed 12 lesions in multiple lobes of her brain as well as the brain stem. Three of these lesions remain active. James and Rachelle are busy scheduling and organizing a myriad of appointments (doctor, PT, OT, Speech, Audiology, and school…) as well as parenting and comforting their other three children. Hayley is resting as much as possible and anxious to try to get to a new normal. She is 17! She would rather be with her friends, driving her car, visiting colleges or probably even completing college applications. Instead, she is learning how to cope with a life-long disease, figure out how to navigate a wheel-chair and praying she can return to school so that she may graduate in May with her classmates.
So, as you can all imagine, the medical bills and needs will continue to pile up. I know I am not alone in my desire to support this amazing family and to take away some of their financial burdens. Please prayerfully consider donating to the ‘Help Hayley Heal’ Fund. I know the “Landmeyer” family would all be extremely grateful and humbled for any support you feel called to give.
Thank you!
