It's a strange time to raise money for a cause other than the current global pandemic but, here we are.
Five years ago our daughter Rooney was diagnosed with an extremely rare difference in her CASK gene (she is one of less than 100 in the world). This diagnosis has offered us a longer path of access to all of her milestones, but has given us an opportunity to cherish and celebrate the inchstones. Both fine and gross motor abilities were and are, incredibly delayed (she took her first step at three years old), and speech is yet to come.
In addition to typical therapies, this past year we have been exploring supports that target neuroplasticity and the autonomic nervous system. A lot of these supports are actually facilitated by the parent in-home, where the child feels safe and comfortable. With our current sheltering circumstance, I feel like God has been leading us down this path, knowing we'd need it. Rooney has had wonderful results from neuro movement lessons (Anat Baniel Method); which are now being adapted for the home, auditory intervention (Safe and Sound Protocol), and reflex integration.
She is starting to feel more at peace with herself and her environment, more adaptable to change and transitions, and more comfortable engaging with her peers. Things that were such a struggle before, are measurably less of a struggle after our experiences with these therapies.
Unfortunately the research based supports that are helping Rooney are not covered by insurance. So far, Rusty and I have been fortunate to be able to provide them for her. But it is simply no longer financially sustainable for us, without reaching out to others for help.
