We are raising funds to help cover travel expenses for Castletownshend Rowing Club members Eimear Walsh and Ella Cialis, who will be representing Ireland at the World Rowing Coastal Championships in Hong Kong.
For a small club with limited resources, they have had a great season with podium finishes on each day out throughout the year. This culminated in two National Championship titles in Antrim in the woman’s quad and woman’s double races for the girls. This regatta was also the qualifying event for the World Rowing Coastal Championships.
Eimear and Ella have been selected to represent their club and country in the woman’s double scull (CW2X) at this event. This will involve a 4km semi final and a 6km final. Fortunately, since the girls ranked so highly in the national event, they have advanced straight to the semi finals, avoiding the heats.
Eimear and Ella will be travelling to Hong Kong at the end of October for ten days, which will include a week of training before race day to acclimatize to conditions; this will also ensure that the girls will have enough time to get used to the rented boat and equipment. The event will have competitors from all levels; national champions right up to Olympic athletes. It will be a great experience and opportunity for the girls to see where they rank against some of the top international athletes. With only a number of weeks left to the big event, Eimear and Ella will be putting in the miles both on the water and in the gym every day.
With the backing of family & friends, the community of Castletownshend, and fellow oarsmen & women of the club, these two women will no doubt be great ambassadors for all those involved in supporting them to represent their club and country on the world stage. So if you see them out and about on the water in Castletownshend, don't hesitate to give them a big wave and a shout of encouragement!
