The first thing I noticed about these students was their curiosity. "How did you get to law school?" "Are you famous since you wrote a book?" "How do I get to be rich?" As if I have any of those answers. But I remember wondering all those same things, too. All 105 of them will undertake a group research project with me this year. They're very interested in the question posed by the Washington Post article last Fall: why the "Strawberry Capital is the early Death Capital of the U.S." which asserts that our hometown of Stilwell has an average lifespan of twenty years less than the national average, less than the coal mining towns of West Virginia and the war torn country of Uganda. Perhaps it really is as simple as some officials say. Maybe we really are that much more fat and poor and addicted than any other group of people in the United States, including those living just twenty miles away on the other side of the Arkansas border. But maybe not. What if it isn't that simple? And what if we just need more information to decide for ourselves?      We must have 26 chromebooks and the associated software which I've roughly estimated at $6,700. We don't have time to wait around for grants (although I am writing for grants also). The computers will remain in the room, available to each class to serve all 105 students and their various needs, such as research, resumes, job searches, college applications and of course ... English IV homework. The software is specially equipped to serve our English As A Second Language students in class, of whom we boast many. We Are All In This Together and The Time Is Now. The name of the project is Chrome Dreams. The Cherokee Nation has already pledged $1000 through our dedicated Councilmen, Canaan Duncan and Shawn Crittenden. I pledge 1% of my salary: $400. Should we be so blessed as to exceed our goal I will begin placing chromebooks in the Junior English class, then the Sophomores, then the Freshmen. If we change the direction of even a single person the ripples will affect generations. Every penny is accounted for in a school account. 100% transparency, 100% for the students.
