Ningali Lawford Wolf Memorial & Funeral Fund
Donation protected
After the sudden passing of renowned Aboriginal actress Ningali Lawford-Wolf, her family has requested the community to join together to assist funding towards both a memorial service and funeral costs to honour her legacy and celebrate her amazing life.
Her children Jaden, Rosie, Alexander, William and Florence plan to return their mother to be buried on the Traditional Country of her ancestors which is situated in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.
A memorial service will be held in Broome on Thursday 3rd October 2019 followed by the funeral and cultural ceremony at Kupartiya Community 120kms east of Fitzroy Crossing on Saturday 5th October 2019.
To accommodate such large events in the Kimberley requires greater expenses, resources and planning.
Ningali spent her life building bridges of friendship and love between Aboriginal and mainstream Australia with not only her vibrant vivacious presence but also her incredible talent as a performer.
Ningali trained as a dancer at the Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre, then continued to perform professionally with Bangarra Dance Theatre in Sydney to build an impressive stage and screen career with performances including Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002), Bran Nue Dae (2009) and Last Cab to Darwin (2015) and television shows The Circuit (2007 – 2010), 3 Acts of Murder (2009), Little J & Big Cuz (2017) and Mystery Road (2018).
Ningali’s theatre roles included her one-woman show Ningali (1994-1996), which toured nationally and internationally and earnt her a Green Room Award for Best Actress and a Fringe First Award for Best New Production, Aliwa for Company B Belvoir (2001), Uncle Vanya (2005) and Jandamarra (2008) both for Black Swan Theatre Company.
At the time of Ningali’s sudden and unexpected passing she was touring Edinburgh, Scotland with Sydney Theatre Company and performing in The Secret River – a production she was heavily involved with developing and narrating.
Ningali’s passion was acting and this is how many people knew her. She also had a great love for her family and friends.
Ningali was strongly connected to her Aboriginal culture. She was willing to share her knowledge to build respectful relationships and understanding between Aboriginal people, fellow Australians and the global community.
Empowering youth to achieve excellence in life through education and training was an area Ningali was greatly committed to.
She was the Ambassador for MADALAH Limited. A not-for-profit organisation that offers Secondary and Tertiary education scholarships for Indigenous students from remote and regional communities to West Australia’s leading boarding schools and Australian universities.
The vision of MADALAH is that Indigenous people have the power to realise their dreams and aspirations.
Ningali’s own life experience of growing up in a remote Kimberley community and then to be on the world stage was an example to the children in the MADALAH program of how dreams and aspirations can be achieved.
She recently worked at Broome and Kalbarri Highs schools supporting children to achieve through education. Miss Ningali was loved by the students and staff.
The Kimberley Agriculture and Pastoral Company (KAPCO) provides an avenue for Indigenous people to gain training, skills and employment on country. It is made up of four Indigenous-owned pastoral stations in northern Western Australia.
Ningali was a Director of the company and was passionate about Aboriginal people participating in and directing self- determined economic development.
Given Ningali’s treasured status in Australian theatre, her extensive family, friendship and community networks many people will want to pay their respects to her.
The events the family have planned will be a tribute and will applaud Ningali’s achievements, celebrate her uniqueness and the joy she brought to us all.
