Casey Nguyen, a wife and mother of two, had an emergency surgery to save her life on Monday, August 26. She contracted necrotizing fasciitis, which is a flesh eating disease. The cause of this occurring in her situation is still unknown. The tissue in her right leg started to die, and to save her life, the doctors had to amputate right above the knee. She will require many things in these upcoming days as her family transitions into a new way of life. Both medically and for her family. Please help them in this very difficult time.
Words from Chris Nguyen her husband posted days after this all occurred to inform friends and family:
I am going to try to keep this short, but I want to first say that our God is an awesome God!
So, Casey Hill Nguyen twisted her ankle Saturday night after a beautiful wedding we were at in Atlanta. She woke up fine and helped pack up so we could get back home to our babies. As we were leaving the room, she started noticing that ankle was hurting and swelling some. We got in the car and rode up the road for lunch and she couldn’t get out to walk in. So, put got our lunch and headed on to Augusta and went straight to the Urgent Care center that Sunday night, got x-rays and got the word there was no broken bone, just a sprained ankle as we expected.
So, Sunday night it started hurting so bad to the point Casey couldn’t sleep. She stayed on top of the pain meds and ibuprofen and it didn’t touch the pain. At that point, I took her on in to the sports medicine/ortho clinic and they did more x-rays from all different angles and didn’t see anything. They knew something wasn’t adding up with all the pain and swelling in her foot/leg so they thankfully advised her to go to the ER.
The ER checked for DVTs and reviewed the x-rays and still didn’t see anything. Thankfully the ER doc still knew something wasn’t right because of the amount of pain Casey was in, so he placed her in the observation unit to keep an eye on her.
Well, around 2am her BP started decreasing and HR increasing. They moved her back to a critical room and decided that morning that she had compartment syndrome in her foot and leg. I knew treatment for that was surgery and they explained what all they would need to do for it. So they rolled her back to the O. R. and per the fasciotomy.
Well, the docs came out of the O. R. and explained to me that it wasn’t Compartment Syndrome. Once they got inside her tissue, they found that she had NECROTIZING FASCIITIS. They were so confused, as I was, that this was what was going on. All we could do is thank God that we were in the hospital and that they found it when they did.
So, Casey was sent to the ICU where in two more hours she had to go back down to the OR because her foot was not getting circulation now. The docs explained to me what was going on and what could possibly happen. Thank God the worse did not happen, but they did save my beautiful wife’s life! I thank God so much for all the amazing surgeons, nurses, respiratory therapist, clerks, pct’s, x-ray techs, lab techs, and of the people behind the scenes to save my wife’s life.
Unfortunately, the necrotizing fasciitis did move very fast up Casey’s leg and the surgeons did have to amputate her leg above her knee. Casey had no idea of what was going on until after surgery Wednesday afternoon and she has taken the news very well. She has been in the best spirits with everything going on and knows that the surgeons did what they had to do we can get back home to our babies.
We can not say thank you enough to everyone who has reached out to us and has prayed for us. We have a very long road ahead of us, and we have the most support from all our our family, church family, friends, co-workers, and people we don’t even know. God has surely blessed us with some amazing people in our lives.
“I raise a hallelujah, with everything inside of me
I raise a hallelujah, I will watch the darkness flee
I raise a hallelujah, in the middle of the mystery
I raise a hallelujah, fear you lost your hold on me!”
