Seeking the Breath of Life

Donation protected
I grew up with three siblings, Roosevelt Perry, Jr. (Rudy/Husayn Raw), Adrian Waddell Perry, and Charles C. Parrott. I didn't grow up with another younger brother, Simeon LaCount Martinez Perry, but being the only girl, I love my brothers dearly! We lost our oldest brother in 2010 but we have remained a close family despite the circumstances. At this time, I am dealing with a health issue and substantial financial assistance is needed. This page has been created to request your assistance.  I was recently diagnosed with severe Emphysema/COPD and I am being considered as a candidate for a lung transplant. For those who know me, you all know that I am a fun-loving, outgoing person who meets no strangers. I have been an avid bowler, a card player, singer, and lover of old school music. One of my best characteristics is that, regardless of my situation or what I have gone through, I have a love for my entire family that is limitless, but especially for my children and grandchildren!  Family is important to me and anyone in the family can tell you that if you want to know a birthday, phone number, or even an address, I am the go-to person. I take pride in my family history and I spend a great deal of time researching the history of my entire family and I help others who are researching their family history. I am a faithful member of Faithzone Christian Fellowship in Winston-Salem, NC, and I truly love my church family. As a member of the church’s Praise Team, my condition has not discouraged my desire to continue singing. I sit on the front row, plug in my machine, and participate 100% with service, especially during Praise and Worship. There was one Sunday when I had my equipment situated where I could still be connected while singing during Praise & Worship. In fact, this past Mother’s Day, my daughter joined me and during the service, my daughter made the comment “you better sing that alto!” As a result of this diagnosis, while I can participate in the things I am used to doing, I am not able to enjoy them like I used to. Singing, bowling, attending concerts, and even family outings are difficult because I not only get winded, but I must either carefully plan the length of my stays (inclusive of travel time) or hope an electrical outlet is available to accommodate my portable oxygen equipment. I also must make sure when attending certain events and programs that I have the necessary accommodations to limit my walking to avoid having to deal with decreased lung capacity, which causes extreme shortness of breath. Funds are needed to cover my transplant preparation, medication and relocation expenses, which are not covered by my insurance. I have been informed by Duke that the goal is about $15,000, and that I will need to relocate to the Durham, NC facilities (about 1.5 hours from home) for approximately six months, if not longer. Please make your contributions as early as possible so I will be that much closer to where I need to be when I return to Duke Transplant Center. Anything that you are able to give is greatly appreciated, and will go a long way towards successful completion of my treatment and recovery. With your help, I look to forward to many more years of watching my grandchildren grow along with being able to spend time with my family. THANK YOU!
