I met Dave when we served together in a Medivac unit in the California Army National Guard. We were wrench turners and air crew members of a helicopter unit which had an active mission in the US and abroad. The members of the 126th medical company which became C Co 1-168 GSAB has a long history of search and rescue, Medivac and providing aid and support to local communities, the state of California, and would deploy to assist other states and overseas troop support. These missions included water drops during California wild fires, search and rescue of lost hikers and any mission to support California including border security. Dave has served in the Army and National Guard for over 20+ years. While performing his daily duties maintaining Blackhawk helicopters he injured his back, legs and feet...Dave was injured while on duty doing aircraft maintenance support for the California wildfires. Like many injuries it was a freak incident that ruptured 3 vertebra in his back. Also, like many injuries politics was involved which delayed immediate treatment and surgery. Injured service members while on duty, not in combat often face military politics especially when faced with injuries vs performance standards. Pressure is often put on every member in the chain of command of the injured service member to avoid liability. After battling for many years Dave has had several surgeries, he lost of one leg and now the possibility of losing his other leg. He was discharged from the Army National Guard due to his injury which also cost him his civilian federal aviation technician position. Dave does have VA medical but no pay at this time. His family didn’t survive the strain of dealing with his major injuries and a loss of income which ended in a divorce, bankruptcy and lost home.I know first hand how hard it is being injured which is difficult enough but then not having a stable place to lay your head at night makes everything a thousand times more difficult. Making ends meet can be tough on a good day but when injured becomes impossible. When injured everything is a thousand times more difficult. He does have some family and children that are able to give some assistance but are stretched. My goal is to get assistance for Dave, and raise enough money to get Dave into a rental home. Dave is currently living in a county homeless shelter that isn’t easy with a wheelchair. Dave needs assistance for most of his daily tasks because he continually has on going medical issues such as infections that he isn’t able to care for himself and the reason he may loose his other leg.
