As many of you know by now, the family suffered a traumatic car accident while on vacation coming back from the mountains in La Maná, Ecuador. There were 5 people inside. The brakes failed on the rental van and ran off the side of the mountain descending about 80 feet. Anna Kristen Poteat was ejected from the vehicle and serious injuries were sustained. She has been hospitalized since Saturday, June 29th.
Kristen was rushed by ambulance last Saturday night and is in the ICU at the Omni Hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador with a head injury, spinal injury, multiple fractures, and has been sedated with assisted ventilation since her hospitalization. Her spine has been stabilized with surgery. She has had a large amount of blood removed from her lungs and has another surgery pending for a fracture in her arm. She is recovering slowly but surely.
Unfortunately, the healthcare system in other countries can be much different than our own. Treatment is on a pay per basis. As you can imagine, Kristen’s family members have incurred significant expenses in just one weeks’ time. Please help if you can. Every little bit is appreciated.
Kristen is a very kind, caring, and ambitious 23 year old woman. She recently graduated in May with a Masters of Education and is to be wed in August to her fiancé, Honorio Lara. The family would like to thank the many friends and family who have reached out to support Kristen during this difficult time. The outpouring of love and encouragement has been instrumental in aiding Kristen’s battle to get her to health and bringing her home.
UPDATE: Anna Kristen came home by air ambulance on Friday, July 12th. She was hospitalized in the Wake Forest Baptist ICU and was later transferred to the Wake Med Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh a week later. She is medically stable and will be undergoing various therapies through this stage in her recovery. Thank you all for your continued support.
