My sister Katie is an amazing mom to two precious kids. She has been through more than anyone should have to endure in their lifetime with her ex. She has been emotionally and physically abused by her ex. Even now, he continues to psychologically torment her. She had a Order of Protection against him but stopped it for the kids. She managed to get through the divorce without an attorney. Unfortunately, he took her back to court. She recently managed to find an attorney that would take payments to start. Katie met with the attorney and supplied her with endless evidence to prove his abuse to her, his drug use, his extremely unpredictable mental health (he was admitted to an inpatient facility a few months ago), his unstable home environment (he has moved 8 times in the last 2 years & the kids currently share a bed in a home he refuses to tell Katie the location of). Katie supplied 200 pages of texts (that she bound and marked MANY incidences proving his behavior). She even had a notarized statement from his ex fiance elaborating on his delusional behavior, manipulation of the kids and drug use (even prior to picking up the kids from school or even from Katie's house). Katie's attorney used absolutely NONE of this.
As if all of that wasn't bad enough, the judge should have been removed from the case since she used to work as an attorney for the same company where her ex was formally employed. He has since carefully orchestrated a medical release from his job with the help of a company assigned doctor that would coach him on what to say.
Now, thanks to an absolute failure of the court system, Katie is required to not only pay him child support but thanks to misrepresentation & poor advise from her attorney, the judge ruled Katie "unreasonable" and must also pay HIS attorney fees.
Katie has since met with an incredible attorney that was absolutely dumbfounded with the case/representation. He will be able to help her however, she can't file anything for an entire year.
The $5000 retainer for the new attorney, her ex's fees, the surprise $3000 to her former attorney... My sister can’t sleep. She's having nightmares about the abuse—it’s like he’s doing this to her all over again. Nobody should have to go through this - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! She never asks for help. Proven by how long she stayed with him. Her immediate family can only help so much as we all have our own financial struggles, but maybe with the power of ALL of us, we can make a difference. I’m asking all of her friends and family and anyone that can to PLEASE try to help my sister get through the next battle with him. Anything remaining will be donated to a local woman's shelter.
