This family is like my own. I think of his Son as my own; he is my son's best friend.
I am so grateful to, and deeply respect, Dad, (who is actually great-uncle) for taking in his son at 8 months old, raising him on his own, as his own -all these years!!!!
Their names are withheld to protect his son, “J" from any possible peer scrutiny, and to respect dad, also “J”, and their privacy. To personalize & personify their very real, their very urgent story, their names are listed as, Son “J” and Dad "J" (J is the first letter of both of their first names!).
Objective:
To raise one year’s worth of rent ($825.00/month) for this family to get back on their feet. Any additional funds will be for their livelihood and the insurmountable financial avalanche from cancer bills.
Story Overview:
This local fellow Texan/ Bryan-College Station family, a family of two- just the two of them, needs our help; a help-up..a hand-up to meet their basic needs from the aftermath of cancer's avalanche on Dad J's life.
Dad J was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, given a 2% survival rate. Though, (momentarily) cancer free, this only parent and family member to Son “J”is facing even more challenges than that of the usual single parenting challenges and cancer recovery challenges. The snowpile and avalanche of cancer aftermath is threatening their livelihood once again.
Dad “J" is the maternal great-uncle of Son “J". Dad “J”took in Son “J” at 8 months old, and has raised him as his own, on his own- as a single parent; the only parent to Son “J”. Dad J spent several years in the courts fighting for Son J as Son J became older and needed legal parent signatures. In fact, Dad J spent every penny of savings and income to make this happen. Less than a decade later, while thriving and overcoming that financial depletion- while raising a fine young man (honor student, accomplished violinist, & accomplished athlete), Dad J, through a medical emergency, was hospitalized and diagnosed with stage four cancer. Dad J didn't stop fighting and miraculously survived the 2% odds. Astonishingly, he drove himself to each chemo and doctor's appointment, and somehow, which I will never understand this kind of strength, just somehow, kept it all together: the finances, the household, the well being of his Son J. Unfortunately, and ashamedly, he was denied three times the right to disability (stage four cancer patients are supposed to automatically qualify). Dad J fought the “final" appeal process and was DENIED.
Dad J (55) is a war veteran (Desert Storm/Gulf War). He has served our country. Unmarried and no children biologically, this honorable man took in his great-nephew (at 8 months old and has raised him as his own, on his own: with NO support, all these years.
As if being a stage four cancer survivor isn't enough for us to help serve his needs, this man has lived an absolute selfless life: serving his country and saving his great-nephew from a life of who's knows what (though we all do know what); The time is now, that we all come together to help this family- who more than deservingly needs us to step in!
Dad J is working as much as his body and jobs will allow (Y'all, he was even working long before he should have been). Son J, this recently 16 -year-old, high school aged, young man is also working to help where he can, while maintaining his grades and his responsibilities. They never complain or pity themselves; instead they just do what they have to do in order to make ends meet. These two (more than) worthy humans are one of OUR OWN, fellow Texans, here in Bryan/College Station. Dad J has done more than he could even bare, without one self-pity complaint. (Information of all these details had to be forced out of him, by the way.) Please join us in standing in the gap to help them overcome.
