Hi! I’m Sasha, a queer non-binary person. I’ve managed to get approved and have had a consult for top surgery, and booked my surgery for October 8th. Currently I wear two binders (compression tops) under my shirt pretty much every day, which is uncomfortable and sweaty.
I’m extremely lucky in that I have approval for OHIP funding for my surgery, but they do not pay for the contouring aspect of the procedure. This is the part that results in a chest that looks like a person’s chest, and not a surgical site, and OHIP considers it to be exclusively cosmetic and therefore not covered.
The cost to me (after OHIP funding) with my surgeon at Toronto East General is $4500+HST plus some additional fees. In the interest of full disclosure, there are a couple of options where my out of pocket cost would be closer to $1500-$2000+HST and fees, but these would all require waiting until late next year for surgery. I really don’t want to wait another year (and two summers) to be able to just wear a T-shirt.
The total out-of-pocket cost for me to have this surgery is $5085, plus the cost of the surgical compression garment I’ll have to buy (~$100). In addition, I will need to travel to Toronto for the surgery, as well as for a pre-op appointment and at least a couple follow-up appointments (about $300 total). I will also need to take at least 1, potentially 2, weeks off of work. Taking into account the surgery fees, garment fee, and travel costs, I’m setting my goal at $5500 after the 2.9% that gofundme takes, so $5665 - I don’t know if I’ll get anywhere near this, but anything helps.
I feel weird about fundraising for this, since I have a solid job and also a credit card, but several people suggested it, capitalism sucks, this surgery should be free, and I’ve already got giant student loans. If you do donate, please message me your address so I can send a thank you card and/or you can pick a garbage movie of your choosing that I will watch and shout about on the internet? I will end this fundraiser when I’ve paid for my surgery/if it hits the goal, and if I don’t end up requiring all the money raised I will donate the extra back into other trans folks fundraising campaigns.
