My grandma Oi Kam Chin first came to this country more than thirty years ago for the same reason most people do, all she wanted to do was provide my father and his siblings with better opportunities for their futures. All this time later, my grandma has successfully established herself in America. A month and a half ago my grandma decided to head back to China to visit her sisters and other relatives that she hasn’t seen for over 30 years after building a life for us in America. Two weeks into her trip, she became ill and checked into a hospital, the doctors on call diagnosed her with a simple fever and sent her home within a few days. Less than a week later, my grandma suffered a stroke and lost consciousness. After being admitted to the intensive care unit, my aunts and uncles in China made it painfully clear that it was crucial for her to get out of this hospital. Despite the hospital being grimfully understaffed (2 Doctors on call), and making no genuine attempt to heal my grandmother’s condition, the cost of her staying in the ICU ended up costing upwards of $1000 every night. I was heartbroken to hear accounts from my relatives of people smoking cigarettes in the hallways, in a hospital that was already without proper ventilation, and completely void of air conditioners. Not surprisingly, her condition in this Chinese hospital became worse and worse with each passing day, no doubt due to the staff’s lack of professionalism, sympathy, and compassion. As an American, I became immediately aware that the way in which the doctors in this hospital carried out their work was inexcusable! When one of the two doctors in the entire hospital was asked what my grandmother’s diagnosis was, his exact response was, “old people are like trees when the tree gets old in order for them to survive they need to do it on their own.” As time continued to pass, I was more and more appalled by the way in which these so-called, “experts” carried on with my grandmother. On one occasion, as my grandmother lied in that sweltering hospital bed clinging for her life, a nurse had the nerve to make such an unbelievably disgusting remark, saying “she’s gained so much weight she looks like she never worked a day in her life.” Even across the world, I was at a loss for words at how unprofessional and cruel these nurses were to their patients. My grandma worked so incredibly hard just for my family and I to be where we are today, and here was this nurse belittling her, I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. After many days had passed, my family attempted to ask the doctors questions about my grandma’s condition, at this point they had mentioned nothing of her improving nor worsening. However, when my family asked the doctor these questions they were met frustration, and had a doctor tell them that there was nothing more they could do for her and then proceeded to ask why we were still here. The worst part of the whole experience was hearing about it from across the world and not being able to do anything about it. I knew they would let her die in that hospital, and send my family home with a coffin, a bill, and a kick out the door. Due to the severity of her condition, and the complete disregard of her humanity by these Chinese doctors, it was essential for us to fly my grandma home on an air ambulance back to the U.S., where she could finally get the treatment and professionalism she deserved. Thankfully, my grandma is now in a hospital capable of giving her the help she so desperately needs, but unfortunately, the cost of the plane ride has proved to be a great monetary strain on my family, and in addition to the hospital bills from China, we could have bought a whole new house with the money. I’m asking for those who have read this far, to please have a heart and help us pay for this debt we have been dealt. I’m forever thankful that I have my grandma with me, but it’s evident that we may need to sell our house to cover the payments. This is the same place my grandma has lived since she first came to America, what she’s worked so hard for her entire life, and I just can’t begin to imagine us having to give everything up, and neither can she. Anyone out there who can feel my pain please, come to our aid, my grandma has been through enough turmoil this past month, she shouldn’t need to have her heart broken on top of everything.
