19th District Migrant and Refugee support 2.0

Donation protected
Asylum seekers, or Nuevos Vecinos (new neighbors), stayed at the 19th District Police Station from April to December 2023. Volunteer community members from across the area teamed up with partners including LakeView Lutheran Church, St. Mary of the Lake, Broadway UMC, the Offices of 44th, 46th, and 47th Ward, and Centro Romero. Together we formed a robust mutual aid network to help fulfill basic needs our new neighbors were facing as well as support their transition to city-run shelters and ultimately housing.

As of 12/1, all Nuevos Vecinos have been transitioned to shelter. Tremendous needs persist for Nuevos Vecinos staying in nearby shelters and those who have recently transitioned to housing.

For the next three months, our mission is to: provide housing, work authorization, and public benefit support to Nuevos Vecinos formerly at the 19th police precinct and/or currently at local shelters, primarily the American Islamic College (AIC) shelter nearby our district. We also support new arrivals at the Landing Zone with essential supplies through welcome kit creation. As opportunities arise for advocacy or meal support, committee leads may connect volunteers to these opportunities.

Keep in touch following your contribution as we provide updates several times a month. And here is the website...
