1955 War Memorial Renovation

1955 WAR MEMORIAL RENOVATION PROJECT

Dear American,

In 1955, the Wicomico County Maryland War Memorial was completed by the citizens of Wicomico County along with the support of the local Posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.  The 32 foot tall concrete Memorial located along Route 13 at the intersection of Priscilla Street is dedicated to those Wicomico Countians who have lost their lives in the service of their country.  A bronze plaque donated by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and 200 pound bronze eagle at the top of the monument are registered with the Maryland Military Monuments Commission.

Over the passage of time the significance and public awareness of the Memorial has been eclipsed and after 60 years, the Memorial is in need of renovation and rededication to find a place of honor in recognition of our veterans who have given the last measure of service to our country.

A unique feature of the monument is the placement of a sealed cylinder containing a scroll with the names of an estimated 156 Wicomico County service men.   One can imagine that when the monument was dedicated that those would be the last names that would need to be written on the scroll.  Over half a century later we all know that the world can still be a dangerous place and the importance of protecting the freedoms we still enjoy.  There are now 34 more names that can be added to the scroll.

The 1955 War Memorial Committee has been formed to lead an effort to renovate the Memorial and rededicate it in 2016.  Both volunteer and financial support is being sought to restore this historic Monument.  Refinishing the concrete monument and fountain, retiling of the memorial plaza, replacement of the electrical lighting system, irrigation system, landscaping and improvements in ADA accessibility are the major renovations needed.

A fund has been established with the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc.  The Committee is working to raise $150,000 to fund the renovations and establish an endowment fund to maintain the monument and replace service flags.  Tax deductible donations can be made on behalf of the 1955 War Memorial Renovation Project.

Sincerely,

Greg Peeples
