1934 Dennis Ace Restoration
Donation protected
The Longreach Fire Brigade Historical Society is a not-for-profit organisation, made up of the firefighters of Longreach, Qld; who give time and raise funds for many causes in the wider community. In November of each year since 1924, the firies compete in what is known as the Fire Trials; a competition to test our skills and drills through timed races. In this event, we utilise our little red truck: "The Dennis"
However, despite its shiny appearance, our beloved 1934 Dennis Ace is in need of repair. Since it was commissioned for use in 1936, this truck was used to fight fires here in Longreach all the way up until 1990! And, it is still used in the annual Fire Trials competition. Being a crash gearbox, the rigours of use for both firefighting and the Fire Trials has finally worn down the teeth on 4 of the gears in the gearbox. These gears are not manufactured anymore, and need to be custom made specially for the truck.
The club is going to be doing as much of the work as possible to repair the generally worn gearbox but, manufacturing hardened steel gears is beyond our skill-set. Luckily, there are engineering works in South-East Queensland that can help us out. We have been given a base cost of at least $2,000 per gear (making up the $8000 goal).
We would appreciate any donations, so The Dennis can be repaired and the Fire Trials can continue for many years to come.
