Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and the 1904 Davis Agreement - Present
Boozhoo/Hello! My name is Sue Cliff; I am a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. My mother is Elizabeth Trottier-Filla; she is 92 years old. This story is about our ancestors and members of our family. We are raising monies to help pay for our advocacy expenditures. Our goal is to educate the Montana governor, Greg Gianforte, state legislators, tribal leaders, and Montanans about the concerns and service needs of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa people who reside in Montana. Current Montana statutes preserve the histories and languages of Montana tribal peoples. However, the laws exclude the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa.
The relocation of many of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa families to Montana from North Dakota is directly related to the 1904 Davis Agreement. Today, many of us are heirs to Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa off-reservation trust land located primarily across the Montana Hi-Line.
We were born and raised in Montana. Our family members are Montana veterans (World War I to the Iraq War). We have strong ties to specific Montana geographic locations (White Water, Larb Hills, Missouri River). Numerous Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa families have buried their loved ones at the Malta, Montana, cemetery for the past century.
Admission of our tribal Nation in Montana statutes will help preserve our tribal identity, history, culture, and language. Inclusion will potentially enhance the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa people.
