17 in 2017 - Racing for a Cause

Building upon an original idea by friend and fellow triathlete David DeSantis’ 16 in 2016 campaign for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, I have decided to shake up my race schedule for 2017 and do 17 events around the world to challenge myself in different way, and to raise money for charity.

Since turning pro as a triathlete in 2008 I have been on essentially the same race schedule every year. While I love the challenge of Ironman, competing against the best in the world, I know there are more challenges out there that I want to try – many that would not be compatible with an Ironman schedule. In addition, I have really enjoyed the volunteer work I have been doing with Girls on the Run, so adding a charitable component to my event schedule completes the picture.

My plan for 2017 so far includes long distance running and cycling events, open water swim races, Otillo races, Half Iron distance triathlons, and more. My first big event in 2017 is the Cowtown 50k in Ft. Worth, Texas, and I will do a couple of shorter races leading up to the event.

If I could get my friends and followers to donate $17 every time I race, I think we can make a big impact, in a grass roots way. I’ll certainly accept larger donations, but I feel like $17 is within reach for most people”.

The charity I've chosen to race for is More Than Sport .  MORE Than Sport™ partners with charitable organizations with proven track-records of tackling issues head on, with passion, creativity, and efficiency. They strive to tackle 5 core causes that matter most in bettering quality of life: water, shelter, food, medicine, and education. They even team up to assist during major crisis situations and natural disasters with necessities, volunteers on the ground, and donations to the communities that are suffering.

 About Me

In 1994, at the age of 12, I did my first triathlon. My passion for the sport grew rapidly, and the adventure began. With the unrelenting support and encouragement of family and friends, I began to pursue my dreams of competing in triathlon on a full-time basis.

“I've been given the incredible opportunity to race the best of the best in triathlon around the world. If I’m blessed enough to be able to continue to do this, I’d like to do it raising awareness for those less fortunate.”
