Nate McWilliams woke up the morning of June 11, excited to attend a basketball game that evening. He never in a million years thought that he would wind up in the hospital, with an almost fatal case of COVID-19. Nate spent nearly the next 6 months in the ICU, for a frightening stay that included 4 months on the ventilator, 3 months on the ecmo machine (which serves as an artificial lung for the sickest COVID patients), and 3 months in a medically induced coma. He suffered numerous hospital acquired infections, and collapsed lungs. His chances of survival were slim. Then a miracle happened; in October he showed enough improvement to come off the ecmo machine, and 2 weeks later, the ventilator.
While his loved ones are grateful for his survival, Nate's recovery will be lengthy and very difficult. Due to the long haul effects of COVID-19, medical professionals estimate 5 days of rehab, for every day spent on the ventilator; which in Nate's case, equals two years. Nate will be unable to work for at least that long, and possibly permanently. As he begins the process of rebuilding his body, the long term effects on his lungs are still unknown.
COVID has touched the lives of everyone we know, and we are so grateful to have Nate back with us. If you can find it in your heart to help through his recovery, please do. We are grateful for any amount of support, as it will all make a difference. Thank you for taking the time to read Nate's story . Any sharing of this page would also be greatly appreciated! Happy Holidays!
