Hi. My name is Jake and I am a 15 year old slalom skier from Kendal.
I first learnt to ski at Kendal dry slope when I was 7 years old and quickly progressed to bring part of their race team, which competed at regional fun competitions.
I then moved on to train at Rossendale and entered some of the regional dryslope races and at the age of 13, completed my first full national dry slope season, taking the U14 British Champion title.
As I moved up into U16, I once again took the British U16 Dryslope Champion title in 2023 and in 2024 I became the U16 Indoor British Champion at Chill Factore in Manchester.
The dream has always been to compete abroad in Alpine events. This is extremely expensive, so the amount of time on snow has been limited compared to full time Alpine athletes. At the end of the 23/24 season I was ranked 4th in the country by year of birth in slalom and was determined to push for GB selection in my final year of children's races in 24/25.
I attended the Aurora Cup, run by the Excel Race Academy, in Norway, in December and won the U16 boys Giant Slalom and came 2nd in the Slalom, resulting in me winning the overall Aurora Cup for U16 boys and winning a prize of an adopted reindeer!
I then went to Austria to compete in International races, against some of the best alpine skiers in my age category. I competed in Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G, with 10 races over 12 days and came away with two 4th places and four 5th places.
Based on these results I have been selected to the British Childrens Ski Team for the 24/25 season. I am competing in Andorra with the rest of my British team mates during the last week in January.
This is a dream come true for me, but keeping this dream alive is very expensive. My parents fund what they can and I am extremely lucky and grateful to be sponsored by Sidas UK, who provide my ski equipment, but the cost of training and competing abroad is vast.
