14 yr old La’akea Armitage’s fight against cancer

On July 2nd 2019, We received the worst news any parent or family member would want to hear.
My 14 year old Nephew La’akea Armitage was having knee pain for awhile, thinking it was no big deal probably a sporting injury. His knee started to get swollen and he was taken to see a doctor. They took an X-ray of his knee, then ordered an MRI. Results of the MRI were given to La’akea and his mom Shenelle that same day which showed La’akea has Osteosarcoma (Bone cancer). We were told this is a very highly aggressive type of cancer. Since then La’akea, his mom Shenelle & other family members have been to numerous doctors appointments here on Maui and on Oahu. Kaiser does not have an orthopedic Oncologist here in Hawaii, so they contract out to Kapi’olani . From now on, every treatment and doctor check ups will be on Oahu. Kapi’olani is great except for the fact that La’akea needs to get his chemo therapy done at Kapi’olani then check ups and medication etc from kaiser Moanalua, which makes things much more difficult and a bit confusing.
Doctors put a port in on July 18th here on Maui. On July 22nd La’akea and His mom flew to Oahu to start his first Chemo therapy. The start of his treatment was delayed a day due to a fever. His first round of chemo was completed and he was hoping to come home to Maui for a 2 week rest period. Unfortunately his blood count was low. Last night he developed a Fever and was transported via ambulance to Kapi’olani which then transported him to kaiser Moanalua. Currently he is in stable condition, still in the hospital. My sister Shenelle who is a single mother hasn’t been to work or home with her 5 other Children, since she and La’akea left for Oahu on July 22nd. We have decided to reach out to our extended families, friends and anyone feeling led to help support a family in need. Your love, prayers and monetary donations will help to alleviate financial stresses. In hopes that my sister Shenelle can focus on La’akea and this new journey.
