My name is Angie Reynoso and my husband Diego has been fighting cancer for fourteen years.
Fourteen years. When we got together in 2011 I had no idea what was coming. Diego was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2012, just a year into our relationship. I chose to stay and I would make that choice again every single day.
Diego is the kind of man who loves comic books and good movies and spending time with his family. He is stubborn and strong and funny and he is mine. And right now he needs our community to show up for him the way he has always shown up for us.
In the last few months, Diego's fight has reached a devastating new chapter.
His colorectal cancer has progressed aggressively, growing to the point where it is now blocking one of his kidneys. He recently had a drain placed directly into his kidney just to keep his body functioning. He also received a new diagnosis entirely: a separate squamous cell carcinoma in his jaw that has broken the jaw bone and is spreading into surrounding muscle and tissue. His father lost his own battle with cancer, and now Diego is facing two simultaneous cancers at once.
Doctors are discussing a major reconstructive surgery to remove the affected portion of his jaw and rebuild it using bone and skin harvested from his leg. We are talking about:
- An 8 to 12 hour surgery
- At least one week in the hospital
- A feeding tube
- A temporary trach to breathe
- And if radiation follows, he would lose all of his teeth first
Through all of this, Diego has been trying to hold onto his job so we do not lose our health insurance but that's just not possible anymore.
I have been working full time, keeping our family going, and getting him to every appointment, every procedure, and every specialist visit in Birmingham. We are doing everything we can. But the financial weight of this is more than we can carry alone.
Every specialist visit. Every procedure. Every prescription. Every trip to Birmingham. It adds up fast.
This GoFundMe exists to help cover Diego's medical costs and transportation so I can focus on what matters most: being by his side through every single step of this.
Diego's brother Nakia is flying in from Austin in June and organizing a benefit concert here at home to surround Diego with love and music. That means the world to us. But we need help now.
If you can give, please give. If you can't, please share. Every dollar and every share tells Diego he is not alone in this fight.
He is not alone.
