Hi, my name is Matt. I have worked with and known Grant McMillan for over 5 years. A few weeks ago, Grant and his wife Kayann had to take their 14-year-old son Cash to the emergency room for what they suspected was a simple urinary infection. Tests were conducted, and Cash was sent home. The next day, they got the call that every parent dreads, asking them to return to the hospital.
Cash was diagnosed with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), a rare cancer attached to the brainstem. This is a particularly aggressive cancer that is hard to treat. Surgery and chemo are not currently options. Instead, this past Monday, Cash started an aggressive course of radiation which will go on for the next 12 weeks, with the goal of shrinking the tumor.
What's especially impressive about Cash is that despite having his world change overnight, he is approaching this challenge with a bravado that most adults don't exhibit, even in the best of circumstances. Determined to maintain a sense of normalcy and routine, he has been trying to go to school, despite being limited in which activities he can participate in and with symptoms that could be considered embarrassing, such as lack of balance and difficulty speaking.
His family and friends have rallied around him and are doing everything they can to show their love and support during this very difficult time. When we approached Grant about doing the GoFundMe, he was hesitant to accept. Being a dedicated family man and a hard worker, he didn't want to impose on anyone. But the fact remains, this family needs our help right now. Aside from time off work, there will be many other expenses for a wheelchair, medicine, medical equipment, hospital trips, and more.
All of us who work with Grant have been so impressed by the poise, bravery, and strength he and his wife have shown in the face of a heartbreaking situation. Know that whether you can help or even just share Cash's story, your time and effort will be beyond appreciated.
Let's all help make things just a little bit easier for this beautiful family and brave young man. Thank you!
