135km for the British Liver Trust

Tax deductible
My name is Natalie and I'm running 135km over a month, from March 26th, to raise money for the British Liver Trust.

The average person in need of a liver is on the transplant list for 135 days, so every km my feet carry me is in solidarity with them. I've decided to start my journey on March 26th, when laws on organ donation in Scotland change and everyone is opted in unless you actively choose not to be.

Unless you know me quite well, you're probably wondering why it all matters to me? During the first lockdown my dad got sick, he'd had liver problems in the recent past but a bout of sepsis ravaged his liver and he went further and further downhill. We spent a good few months in constant health battles before we were told he'd now need a transplant. What felt like a long wait with a family with held breath passed and he was given an appointment at the transplant centre to go through the testing to see if he could even get a liver, thankfully after the week he was put on the list.

But liver disease doesn't like to play ball, bouts of infection, massive deterioration, months spent in hospital being taken on and off the list due to how ill he was, he was going downhill fast. He'd barely been on the list 45 days and we were told it was a now or likely never scenario. Thankfully, on November 22nd he called and there was an organ there for him, the transplant was successful and my dad has a second chance at life. If my dad had to wait 135 days on the transplant list, this run would be in memory of him, not in honour of him.

The kicker with a lot of liver problems is, they are wholly preventable with lifestyle change and healthier habits. Not only does the British Liver Trust work to support people with liver problems with support groups, help lines etc. but also campaigns for early detection, treatments and prevention.

So my challenge is laid down, 1km for every day the average person is on the liver transplant list. Hopefully we can raise £500, actually I'd love it if we can raise more than that, it's all for a good cause. Whatever you can give would be so gratefully received, I know life hasn't been amazing for us all with lockdowns and restrictions and the financial and emotional implications that come with all of that but any little you can spare will go to a fantastic cause.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to read/watch, share, send your wishes or even just take a moment to take a little better care of themselves - health is wealth. You've only got one liver, you may as well love it.
