13 Miles 13 Months for Women's Shelters Canada
Hi Everyone - It's Mare!
I’ll be putting my legs behind a great cause to support Women’s Shelters Canada – the national body that supports over 600 shelters across the country for women and children fleeing violence.
Over the next 13 months, I’ll be running 13 half marathons - that’s 13.1 miles (21.1km) per run - for the 1/3 to 1/2 of women experiencing or that have experienced domestic violence. Your dollars can make a difference as donations could help provide food, clothing, and utilities to shelters across the country.
If you'd like to follow my race journey across Canada, I’ll be posting content to my Instagram @flairofmare
I'll also be providing additional information on ways to get involved and show your support #13miles13months #endvaw
About Women's Shelters Canada
Women’s Shelters Canada brings together 16 provincial and territorial shelter organizations and supports the over 600 shelters across the country for women and children fleeing violence. It represents a strong, unified voice on the issue of violence against women on the national stage. If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, you can find your nearest women’s shelter and its crisis line on www.sheltersafe.ca.
The Cause
According to UN Women, Violence Against Women means any act of gender-based violence that causes harm or suffering to women or girls and can include economic, psychological, emotional, physical, and sexual violence. Due to the immense sensitivity of this issue, its prevalence is likely underreported. Even so, UN Women estimates that 1 in 3 women worldwide experiences physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner; and a recent study by the Government of Canada revealed that number was closer to a 1/2 of women in Canada alone.

A personal note with love
If You are, or know a woman, experiencing domestic violence, support and services are available through ShelterSafe. The use of shelters is free for you and your children; even your pets are welcome at many shelters or transition houses across the country.
