12 surgeries led to an amputation

My name is Kathrine and I was born with Neurofibromatosis. This is a neurological disease where tumors grow either inside or outside of the body and on the nerve endings. It can cause a myriad of different problems. When I was 6 years old, I broke my leg (tibia) in a skiing accident. Due to the neurofibromatosis, I had slow healing and neurofibromas growing in the bone. Neurofibromas prevent normal healing completely. On top of this, I have a mother with mental illnesses who is anti-doctors and wouldn’t allow surgeries. She manipulated me for years into believing that if I were to have a surgery, the doctors would just amputate my leg. My leg would never be fully healed when the casts were taken off, and being an active kid, I would break it again. I broke my leg several times after that including a second spot on the tibia and a third at the bottom of the fibula.
When I went to college, one of my sisters sat down with me and explained the importance of fixing my leg. In 2011, we went to a doctor who deals with complicated neurofibromatosis cases. He told us that I had a 50/50% chance of success vs amputation and that if I did nothing, I’d need an amputation in 10 yrs. I am now 27 years old. It has been 7 years and I have endured 12 surgeries to try to save my leg. I have had several apparatuses on my leg. Pieces of my hip were taken to stimulate healing in my leg. I currently have screws and plates in my leg that broke due to my bone not filling in and metal wearing down. The doctor has tried everything to save my leg, but due to the neurofibromatosis, my body shut down and wouldn’t heal.
I now need an amputation of my lower leg (below the knee). This is scheduled to happen July 26, 2018.
After my amputation, I will need prosthetics. Prosthetics are not only very expensive, they need to be replaced every few years or when they get out grown. After surgery, the residual limb changes and prosthetics need to be replaced. Prosthetics are mostly not covered by insurance. The only one that is covered is a basic walking prosthetic. I would like to be able to afford the prosthetics that will give my life back and allow me to do the things that I have always dreamed of doing. I am hoping to raise money to help me afford the many prosthetics that I will need and help pay for medical costs. I can use all the help I can get. Thank you for caring.
