My name is Millie and some of you may already know my story...
In June this year, my life changed when I was diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES). For months, I had been experiencing symptoms without realising how serious they were. Eventually, I lost all feeling in my legs and required emergency surgery.
CES is a rare but life-changing condition caused by compression of the nerves at the base of the spine. It can lead to paralysis, loss of bladder and bowel control, and severe, ongoing pain. I feel incredibly grateful that surgery allowed me to regain control of my bladder and bowels, as well as the feeling in my legs.
However, my journey hasn’t ended there. I still live with numbness, tingling in my leg, and chronic back pain that may never fully resolve. Despite this, I am determined to rebuild my strength and fitness.
Swimming has always been a passion of mine, and it is now also a vital part of my recovery. That’s why this October, I am challenging myself to swim 10 kilometres throughout the month — to raise awareness of CES and to raise funds for the Cauda Equina Champions Charity (CECC).
✨ All proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated directly to the Cauda Equina Champions Charity. ✨
CECC provides vital information, advocacy, and support for patients and families affected by CES. Your donations will help them to:
Raise awareness so CES symptoms are recognised sooner.
Support people living with the long-term effects of CES.
Fund research and advocacy to improve treatment and outcomes.
Every donation, big or small, will make a difference. And if you can’t donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser to help spread awareness of this rare condition.
Thank you so much for your kindness and support
