Hi everyone! My name is Mario Alvarez. Last August, I took up running after a series of challenging trials and the decision to exit my comfort zone. Since then, I’ve completed a marathon and a 50-miler.
I’m currently preparing for the Beast of the East 100, a 100-mile trail ultramarathon this December in western North Carolina covering over 17,000 ft in elevation gain. This is akin to running nearly 4 marathons while climbing a mountain at the same time. It will be the most difficult thing I have ever done. Injuries and personal circumstances persist, but each setback has proven to be another reason to push forward.
For as long as I can remember, my career ambition has been to become a physician, now specializing in oncology, shaped by my time at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida. While working there, I met countless patients whose courage leaves me in awe. Defying societal labels, they bravely showed that they are defined not by their cancer diagnosis but by their relentless tenacity in the face of adversity and uncertainty. They face countless daily battles with unyielding strength and resilience, imparting invaluable lessons on the significance of an unbreakable will, showing us all that every day is an opportunity to fight for what matters, redefining what it means to have grit. The hospital staff’s tireless dedication to their care, along with their boundless optimism, warmth, and radiance, inspires me to give my all, both in this race and in my future career. The patients, their caregivers, and all of the staff are heroes. This run is for them.
All funds raised will directly support essential care and support services at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center in Weston (FL). These include several kinds of therapies, counseling, and financial assistance, among others, benefitting patients and their families alike. Every dollar fuels breakthroughs, lifts those in need, and provides the one thing we all strive for: hope.
Please join me in making a difference. A donation, a share, or a word of encouragement will honor these fighters and power this mission.
Thank you so much for your support! :)
