Plant 3,000 trees to restore habitat for greater gliders

The Great Eastern Ranges (www.ger.org.au) and DARWIN200 (www.darwin200.com) have joined forces to raise AUS $35,000 to plant 3,000 trees and run many other activities to restore and reconnect 15 hectares of habitat for greater gliders and other wildlife in need.

Populations of the endearing greater glider have declined by a staggering 80% in NSW’s Greater Blue Mountains due to habitat loss, fragmentation and the impacts of climate change. These cat-sized marsupials are a forest marvel, able to glide a whopping 90 meters between trees in a single leap. They are also an important “indicator species” giving us vital information about the health of our forests.

These gentle creatures feed almost entirely on young eucalyptus leaves and depend on tree hollows for survival. Hollows large enough to support a greater glider take up to 400 years to develop. With many of these beautiful old trees lost in the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, we need to restore their forest glideways.

100% of the money raised as a result of this fundraising campaign will be donated to GER's Glideways program to support gliders by planting new habitat trees, assist natural regeneration, installing nest boxes and creating new tree hollows, building landholder capacity, research and engaging and educating local communities.

The work will benefit not only greater gliders but the many other animals that share their forest homes, such as koalas, spotted-tailed quolls and powerful owls. To learn more, visit www.glideways.org.au

By donating to this project, you will be helping to support the planting of at least 3,000 trees and many other activities to support greater gliders and their forest neighbours from Kanangra-Boyd to Wyangala and beyond. Together we can ensure that these special animals are not lost forever.

WHO WE ARE
The Great Eastern Ranges (GER) brings people together to connect, protect and regenerate nature across 3,600km of eastern Australia. In the Greater Blue Mountains, our regional partner Kanangra-Boyd to Wyangala (K2W) Link Inc, works with local landholders, communities and First Nations groups to secure the future of their greater gliders and other forest dependent native animals as part of GER's Glideways Program.

DARWIN200 is a planetary conservation initiative that aims to change the world of tomorrow by empowering young conservationists. We are sailing a 107-year old historic tall ship around the world following the route of Charles Darwin. Teams of the world’s top young conservationists (known as ‘Darwin Leaders’) join our tall ship in the ports Charles Darwin visited to undertake an intense, transformative programme of unique training and field experience. The training programme centres on studying the conservation of endangered species to give each young conservationist new skills to use during the course of their careers (spanning the next 50 years) - see: www.darwin200.com/leaderboard The DARWIN200 team is supporting the Great Eastern Ranges in raising funding and planting trees as part of this effort.
