Every day, innocent men, women, and children in Ukraine are dying.

They’re fleeing their homes.

They’re being separated at borders; children taken from the arms of fathers who have no choice but to fight for their country.

And we’re watching it unfold in real-time.

I recently saw a video of a young Ukrainian family- a man, a woman, and their little girl. They were running across a road, keeping their heads low, trying to escape whatever besieged city they were in at the time.

They’d almost made it when the road came under heavy artillery fire.

A missile struck.

A flash of fire, light and smoke filled the air and, as it cleared, sharp cries for help rang out from people in the area.

The camera panned down.

The family was on the ground. Dead. Just like that.

I think that was when the reality of the war in Ukraine hit home for me.

The image of that little girl, lying motionless on the concrete beside her parents, with a tiny backpack full of possessions on her back, hasn’t left my mind since.

It breaks my heart to know similar tragedies are playing out all the time across the country.

That’s why I’ve decided to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal by running unsupported from Land’s End to John O’ Groats this summer.

Starting in June, I’ll be running roughly 1,000 miles with everything on my back, sleeping outside each night as I make my way across the UK.

With any luck, the war will be over by the time I do it.

But the vital relief effort and recovery process will be ongoing.

Your donations, however big or small, will make a huge difference to people who have had their entire lives turned upside down. Thanks to the Disasters Emergency Committee, the UK government will match every £1 donated, effectively doubling whatever I can raise.
