A Living Archive for the Next 100 Years
In 2026, Stafford Beer — the man who saw the future before we were ready for it — would have turned 100.
Stafford was more than a scientist. He was a revolutionary, a poet, a painter, and a philosopher-king of the systems age. He pioneered organisational cybernetics, gave us the Viable System Model and Team Syntegrity, and led Chile's Project Cybersyn — the first attempt to run a national economy inspired by cybernetic principles, to support massive social and economic change.
He believed organisations should be built for freedom, not control, and that our world should be designed for people's well-being, not just profit. As his centenary approaches, we aren't just looking back at a life well-lived. We are activating a body of work the world needs right now.
The Stafford 100 Project is our collective gift to the future. We are raising funds to bring two interconnected pillars to life:
The Documentary — A Portrait of a Holistic Human. Not a dry academic film, but a cinematic journey from the radical control rooms of Chile to the quiet, artifact-filled solitude of his Welsh cottage. Through never-before-seen archives and intimate stories from those who walked beside him — his daughter Vanilla, his partner Allenna Leonard, his closest collaborators in Latin America and Europe — we are painting a vivid, playful portrait of the man behind the beard. Much of what made Stafford Stafford lives only in the memories of those who were there. These are voices still with us, stories never recorded, first-hand witnesses to ideas that changed lives. A film like this can be made now, or not at all.
The Festschrift — A Handbook for Managing Complexity. A creative, open-access book co-edited by Angela Espinosa, Markus Schwaninger, and José Pérez Ríos, translating Stafford's radical insights into a guide for the next generation; and visualising the emergent developments on Stafford's science since he passed away. Free to every student, activist, and leader tired of broken systems.
Why now? Stafford famously wrote, "Nothing else in the world is so powerful as an idea whose time has come." Look around. Our systems are cracking because they lack the requisite variety to meet the complexity of our era. What if hierarchy is the problem, not the solution? What if the most useful ideas were set aside because they were inconvenient to power? Stafford gave us another map. It is time we used it.
This project is entirely grassroots — created by and for those who were transformed by Stafford's mind and spirit. Every contributor becomes part of a living archive: a co-keeper of memory, a companion in the work, a quiet thread in the same fabric Stafford spent his life weaving.
