100 Mile Walk along the Jurassic Coast for SMA
**EDIT:
Apologies to anyone who has already donated - I fractured my shin at the start of May and it unfortunately still hasn’t healed :( so instead I have opted to do 100 miles solo before the middle of July so I can still continue to fundraise for this amazing charity!!
My name is Florrie and at the end of June (20th-22nd) I will be walking 100 miles over the course of 3 days to raise money for Rally Round Rupert, a charity focused on Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) is a genetic condition that causes muscle weakness and progressive loss of movement. It is a rarer condition resulting in an honestly upsetting lack of research and funding. Some of the most common symptoms of SMA include:
- muscle weakness – such as floppy or weak arms and legs
- movement problems – such as difficulty sitting up, crawling or walking
- problems with breathing or swallowing
- twitching or shaking muscles (tremors)
- bone and joint problems – such as an unusually curved spine (scoliosis)
For as long as I can remember I have watched my best friend Molly and her younger brother Stanley grow and navigate life with SMA. Even when faced with various obstacles that many of us wouldn't even have to think about, they have absolutely smashed every single one and I could not be more proud of the both of them. I am putting myself through the hellish task of walking 100 miles in mid June heat not just for them but to raise money for the absolutely wonderful charity Rally Round Rupert.
Rally Round Rupert is an amazing charity helping to improve the understanding and knowledge of SMA among the public, while also providing financial support to further advance clinical research of SMA. So far their amazing work has raised over £353,000 and helped to fund 2 clinical trials!! Click here to see their website and the great work they have done: Rally Round Rupert
Any amount of money would be so greatly appreciated and I thank every single one of you for your donations no matter big or small! With ongoing funding we can increase the amount of research going into SMA and ultimately find ways and medicines to improve quality of life :)
Molly and Stanley if you're reading this (which I flipping hope you are) I love you both and I wouldn't walk 100 miles for anyone else.
