Hi, I'm Terrence Coffie, Founder of The Social Justice Network’s Comic Books For Justice Initiative.

What if a comic book could change a life?

At Comic Books For Justice (CB4J), we believe it can. We believe in the power of stories—not just to entertain, but to educate, to uplift, and to free the imagination of those who’ve been overlooked for far too long.

Our newest campaign, Turning The Page on Illiteracy, was born out of a staggering reality:

> 70% of incarcerated individuals read at a 4th-grade level or below.

> In New York City, children from under-resourced neighborhoods are falling behind in reading at alarming rates.

These are not just numbers. These are people—parents, sons, daughters, neighbors—who never had access to the joy and power of reading. For many, this disconnect begins early and continues through a cycle of systemic inequality, school push-out, and incarceration.

We knew we had to do something!
Why Comic Books?

Because they work!

Comic books are approachable. They're visual, exciting, and filled with characters who look like us, talk like us, and dream like us. They build vocabulary, increase comprehension, and help even reluctant readers find confidence and joy in the written word.

Comics create entry points—especially for those who’ve never seen themselves as readers.

And more than anything, they remind people—kids and adults alike—that imagination is power.

Our Mission:
In partnership with the SUNY Office of Higher Education in Prison and Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison, we launched the Turning the Page on Illiteracy Campaign to:

> Place 10,000 comic books in correctional institutions across New York State

> Host Comic Books For Justice Family & Friends Day events in underserved NYC communities—bringing families together through comics, literacy activities, cosplay, art, and joy

These events are more than just moments—they’re movements. They rebuild connections, encourage learning, and restore dignity. We’re also working with local libraries, city agencies, schools, and community leaders to expand access to reading and storytelling in spaces that have historically been denied it.

100 Super Friends — Will You Be One?
We are asking 100 Super Friends—everyday heroes like you—to help us raise $25,000 to bring this vision to life.

Every dollar you give helps us print and distribute comics, support educational workshops, and deliver hope, creativity, and connection to those who need it most.
