On Saturday 19th September, a team from Glossop Cricket Club will take on a demanding Lake District 10 Peaks Challenge to raise funds for two causes close to our hearts – The Christie Charity and grassroots cricket at Glossop Cricket Club.

Starting and finishing in Buttermere, the route covers approximately 26km and almost 2000 metres of ascent, taking in ten Lake District summits including Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, Haystacks, Brandreth, Grey Knotts, Dale Head, Hindscarth, Robinson and Fleetwith Pike. It will be a full day in the mountains, testing both physical fitness and mental resilience, but it is a challenge we are proud to take on together.

The Christie Charity provides life-saving treatment, pioneering research and specialist care for cancer patients and their families. Many people connected to our club and wider community have experienced first-hand the incredible work they do.

This challenge is also inspired by Glossop Cricket Club member and sponsor Mark Senior, who has raised significant funds for The Christie over many years following the loss of his wife Sue. His commitment to both The Christie and our club has been a huge inspiration behind this fundraising effort.

Alongside supporting The Christie, this challenge will help us continue the remarkable growth of grassroots cricket in Glossop.

Over the last three years, our club has transformed. We have grown from three junior teams to eight, expanded from two senior teams to six, launched a women's cricket team and introduced disability cricket sessions. Participation continues to grow year on year.

Our All Stars and Dynamos programme has grown from 55 children in 2023 to a record 148 in 2026, while more than 75 junior cricketers now play regularly in our age-group squads. Every week, hundreds of players, parents, volunteers and supporters engage with the club.

To support this growth, we have already funded coaching qualifications for 11 volunteer coaches and first aid training for 15 volunteers. Every Friday evening alone requires around 35-40 volunteers to safely deliver cricket sessions for the large numbers of children and families attending the club.

As participation increases, so does the demand on our equipment, coaching resources and facilities. The club is now hosting more cricket than at any point in its recent history, with junior, women's and senior cricket placing significant pressure on our grounds and infrastructure. We are looking to extend our cricket square to create additional wickets, improve training resources and ensure our facilities can continue to support increasing levels of participation. Much of the machinery used to prepare and maintain our grounds is now over 20 years old, making ongoing investment essential to provide safe, high-quality playing and training environments.

Funds raised through this challenge (and others in the pipeline) will help us continue growing participation in cricket across our community. The funding will support coaching and volunteer development, improved training equipment, women’s and girls’ cricket, disability cricket sessions, additional playing capacity and the facilities needed to accommodate a rapidly growing player base.

Ultimately, this investment will help us welcome more players, provide a better experience for existing members and ensure cricket remains accessible, inclusive and sustainable in Glossop for years to come.

Our vision is simple: to bring people together through challenge, community and sport, raising meaningful funds for an incredible charity while creating more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to access cricket locally.

All funds raised through this campaign will be split equally, with 50% donated to The Christie Charity and 50% invested into grassroots cricket at Glossop Cricket Club.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help make a genuine difference.

Thank you for your support.
