In this season of gratitude, I find myself overwhelmed with my many blessings: family, health, stability, and meaningful work. Alongside my appreciation for all I have, I’m also increasingly aware of families in my community who make do with so much less.
Growing up in Acton, I had little sense that people in my community went without. But the need is here: almost a quarter of Acton households meet federal standards for low income. According to data from the school department, 10.86% of the 2020 - 2021 student population qualified for free and reduced lunch.
This fall, I joined the board of the Doli Atamian Campership Program (DACP). Our mission is to provide meaningful summer experiences to kids and teens in Acton and Boxborough, whose families would otherwise be unable to participate. DACP fills the support gap between school years by giving families suffering financial hardship access to summer programs, a doorway to community and peer inclusion. As I think about my children and the importance of their summer experience - for them and us as working parents - I feel compelled to ensure that every family who needs our support can get it.
As a working board of Doli Atamian Campership Program, we aim to finance 100 camperships for the summer of 2022. In over 25 years, we have never had to turn away any eligible application due to lack of funds.
