1 million yards(meters) for Optometry Giving Sight

More than 600 million people around the world are functionally blind or vision impaired because they do not have access to a simple eye examination and glasses they need. Optometry Giving Sight is the only global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Your donations allow Optometry Giving Sight to fund the solution by supporting programs that: Train local eye care professionals, establish vision centers for sustainability, and deliver eye care and low-cost glasses.

I am Dr. Michael Murphy, Optometrist, and I have been on a personal quest to improve my health and lose weight since June 17, 2022 by swimming long distance and eating right.

I am making great progress for myself, but for a little extra motivation I am starting this campaign with my personal pledge to donate money to Optometry Giving Sight based on reaching some milestones.

1) Through 1 million yards (568 miles) I pledge $2 per mile.

2) When I reach 1 million yards, I pledge $10 per mile for everything beyond 1 million yards through June 16, 2023 (primary goal reached 5/4/2023: on to 1,000,000 meters)

3) I will also donate $2 per pound lost.

As of today, January 17, 2023, the distance is just over 528,000 yards (300 miles) and I have lost 65 pounds. I am kicking this off with my $730 donation (2 x 300 + 2x65).

(update: 5/8/2023, now over goal at 1,003,934 yards, or 570.4 miles. Next goal 1,000,000 meters, or 621.4 miles...and the weight loss is now 78 pounds)
