1 Duality . Burning Man Art 2024

Hello beautiful people

We are Juan and Nele. A few years ago we got amazed by Burning Man and the amount of co-creation. We admire how participants go into extremes to produce something beautiful. So we decided to also accept the challenge. It’s been our dream for a while to bring an art piece to Playa, and this year it feels like the right timing. We live on an island in Panama, which brings its own set of unique challenges. We’re asking for the community's help to make this project better than we could just on our own. Our piece is designed very low-scale, but with the intention to make a big impact.

Project description

1 Duality is specifically created for Burning Man. The idea started on playa: ‘What attracts us the most? What are we most grateful for? What do we want to contribute?’ And so the idea came alive to create a shelter. It must be cozy and fluffy. Definitely pink. And lights, lots of lights. What if we put a disco ball on top? And make it shiny. This sounds like life, in all its dualities. And those dualities already exist from the mere beginning.

Physical description

A double spiral on the desert floor, based on the fibonacci sequence, 100ft wide, a galaxy. At the center a wooden box to climb inside or on top. The inside is cozy, the outside is shiny. The 10ft tall disco ball will cast its rays into the desert dust. The whole piece will be lighted by (neon) LED lights and powered with battery and solar.

Interactivity

- Visually: shiny, artsy cube and discoball, lighted up at night

- Physically: seek shelter, climb on top. The arms of the spiral can be walked to experience the cycle of existence

- Emotionally: a meeting space, because a shelter is the perfect location to get into the deepest conversations with strangers.

- Mentally: poems, writings and objects inside the cube about the duality of life, all contributed by the community

- Audio: a speaker will generate a low frequency, to feel and hear just enough to be able to calm down the mind

Philosophy

Matter starts from 1, then there is 2.

Life is a constant duality, yet everything is one. Everything is connected.

There is light and dark, good cannot exist without the bad.

We need this constant trigger to evolve.

Meet the team

Nele grew up in Belgium and started traveling 5 years ago. Juan was born in Ecuador, but has been living abroad most of his life. When we met in Panama, we soon discovered our mutual passion for creation, projects and good music. We love our community on the island we live on and definitely believe in sharing and gifting. So we gathered a crew from all around the world and decided to gift something back to Playa.

Contribution

Join us and be part of the art!

All funds will go straight to the creation of the art piece and its transportation to playa. We will not be using it to pay anyone who is working on the project. We are nonprofit independent artists.

For all gifters we offer the option to send us a printable media/poem/story that will be placed physically inside of the art piece. Something that reminds you of the dualities experienced in life.
