1 Day 100k - Support SAMH this August
Challenges with poor mental health are very real - whether it be depression and anxiety like the team completing this challenge, or eating disorders, gender identity, sexual preference, addiction, or any number of the chronic conditions that plague us. Both walkers have had issues with resources and professional support for ADHD and having access to Psychiatric support for chronic anxiety and depression. We want to change that. While 100k steps is a challenge, it is a drop in the bucket compared to the challenge of being able to live and survive with the challenges of poor mental health.
Your donation will be given to SAMH to help fund ongoing support for those in Scotland who need that extra bit of help to make it through the day, and to help with research into better ways of treating our poor mental health and its triggers.
Around one in three people are estimated to be affected by mental health problems in Scotland in any one year, with levels of loneliness, anxiety and economic concerns having increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also evidenced that mental ill health in adolescence increases the risk of subsequent mental ill health later in life, with impacts of COVID-19 pandemic reported to include a deterioration in mental wellbeing and increased loneliness among children and young people. Globally, around 5% of adults are estimated to experience depression and it is more prevalent among women than men. Around 703,000 people die due to suicide every year globally and rates remain consistently higher for men than for women.
More information about Scottish Action for Mental Health: Around since 1923, SAMH is Scotland’s national mental health charity.
Today, we operate over 70 services in communities across Scotland, providing mental health social care support, addictions and employment services, among others. Together with national programme work in See Me, respect me, suicide prevention, and physical activity and sport, these services inform SAMH’s policy and campaign work to influence positive social change.
